The crew of UKI-NYKI made a trip to see the beautiful town of Uusikaupunki on the southwest coast of Finland! We saw the bay, old wooden houses and had a chance to chat a bit with the locals. We learned a lot about the history of the town and its essence. People in Uusikaupunki are friendly, with a good sense of humour. The peaceful town is full of surprises; the town has its own Peru-shop and as they phrase it, in their slogan; a place where you can have "Probably the best burger in the world". Not bad at all. Well, The Finnish are honest, its refreshing!

Trivia of Uusikaupunki (Finnish pronunciation: [ˈuːsiˌkɑupuŋki], Swedish: Nystad), is a town and municipality of Finland.
It is located in the Finland Proper region. The municipality has a population of 15,828 (31 January 2011)[2] and covers an area of 1,932.68 square kilometres (746.21 sq mi) of which 1,430.07 km2 (552.15 sq mi) is inland water. The population density is 31.49 inhabitants per square kilometre (81.6 /sq mi).
The municipality is unilingually Finnish. Both its Finnish and Swedish names mean literally "new town".

UKI-NYKIn tekijäryhmä vierailulla Uudessakaupungissa; suomalaisen Helenan kotikaupungissa!
Tutuistuimme paikalliseen miljööseen; puutaloarkkitehtuuriin ja lahden vilkkaaaseen ympäristöön. Paikallisilta opimme paljon "UKIN" historiasta. Niin, ja keskellä virtaa lahti, ei joki, kuten ystävälliset ukilaiset asiaa korostivat. Uusikaupunki oli täynnä yllätyksiä, kaupungista löytyy mm. Peru-kauppa ja ruokakioski, jossa tarjoillaan "Probably the best burger in the world". Suomalaiset ovat rehellisiä.

Triviaa uudestakaupungista: Uusikaupunki (ruots.

Uusikaupunki on Suomen 10. vanhin kaupunki. Kuningas Kustaa II Aadolf perusti kaupungin vuonna 1617. Uudellakaupungilla on myös osansa Euroopan historiassa, sillä suuren Pohjan sodan rauha julistettiin siellä 30. elokuuta 1721.

We have arrived in Turku City!

After a wonderful flight by FINNAIR, the crew touched down in Helsinki-Vanta Airport.

It was such a culture shock on the way over to Turku. What a change from New York City! The massive skyscrapers had been replaced by fields of green and the trees stretched for miles.

It was literally a breath of fresh air wherever you turned. The people were pleasant and helpful and we found our way in no time at all.

It is such an honor to be surrounded by all types of artists and installations in Turku City. We are eager to check out the new exhibits as well as the city landmarks such as the Turku Library, which has an amazing selection as well as modern architecture.

Check back for more about UKI-NYKI. And also check out the many projects going on this summer by clicking on the big ORANGE BALL below.

Enjoy!

Independence Day is a national holiday marked by patriotic displays. Similar to other summer-themed events, Independence Day celebrations often take place outdoors. Independence Day is a federal holiday, so all non-essential federal institutions (like the postal service and federal courts) are closed on that day. Many politicians make it a point on this day to appear at a public event to praise the nation's heritage, laws, history, society, and people.

Families often celebrate Independence Day by hosting or attending a picnic or barbecue and take advantage of the day off and, in some years, long weekend to gather with relatives. Decorations (e.g., streamers, balloons, and clothing) are generally colored red, white, and blue, the colors of the American flag. Parades are often in the morning, while fireworks displays occur in the evening at such places as parks, fairgrounds, or town squares.
